Susan Lee Bristol (Nelson)
July 28, 1945 ~ January 22, 2024 (age 78) 78 Years Old
Susan Lee Bristol (Nelson) was a remarkable woman who lived a life full of accomplishments and service to her community. Born July 28, 1945, to Virginia and Roger Nelson, a naval aviator, they lived in Washington, California, and Hawaii, among other Navy duty-stations. She graduated from Santa Monica High School and the University of Iowa before moving to Frisco Colorado, to work at Arapahoe Basin and the local electric utility. There she got her first horse and met her “cowboy", Harold I. Bristol. They married on December 5, 1970, in Dillon, CO, and moved to the Davidson Ranch south of Nathrop, CO. There they worked on the ranch, started a family, and became involved in the community. Susan and Harold started Bristol Excavating, Inc. and in 1983 moved into the town of Buena Vista, CO, and continued their cattle business.
Susan was a passionate community servant and volunteer. She served on the Buena Vista School Board, BV Town Council, Heritage Board, Public Library Board, 4-H Club, Chaffee County Mentoring, Chaffee People’s Clinic, Chaffee County Land Trust, League of Women Voters, Chaffee County Democrats, and the Governor-appointed Tony Grampsas Youth Services Board. She helped start Build A Generation and the Boys & Girls Club of BV. She was an avid reader and enjoyed genealogy research, bridge group and boating on Lake Powell.
Susan is survived by her husband Harold Bristol and her three sons Bruce (Diane) Bristol, Andrew Bristol, John (Ana) Bristol, grandson Ethan Bristol, and brothers David and Ricky Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Steven and Peter Nelson. Instead of flowers, she would ask for donations to support the Boys & Girls Club of Chaffee County at www.bgcchaffee.org.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Congregational United Church of Christ - Buena Vista at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024.
