Steven Lane Obituary

Steven Richard Lane of Nathrop died at University Hospital in Aurora Feb. 14, 2019, surrounded by family.

He was born in Spokane, Washington, the son of John E. and Barbara A. (Daugherty) Lane.

As the son of an Air Force fighter pilot, he moved frequently during his youth. When his father retired from the Air Force, the family settled in the family home in Salida.

Mr. Lane graduated from Salida High School in 1972. He then enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a boatswain’s mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in Vietnam.

After leaving the service, he worked at the Climax Mine in the Leadville area, and later was a full-time fireman with the Leadville Fire Department.

He then moved to Arizona when his parents retired there.

In Arizona, he worked as a locksmith for the Peoria School District. He returned to Chaffee County after retiring.

Mr. Lane had many skills, including locksmithing, electrical and plumbing.

He was quite a handyman and was quick to assist everyone who might need his talents, family members said. He also helped with several community services in the Buena Vista and Salida areas.

His hobbies were building projects, metal detecting, shooting and exploring backcountry areas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brother Dallas C. Lane (Sandy); nephews Colter J. (Oliver) and Chandler N. Lane; niece Taylor N. Maxcy (James), Arizona; cousins Rod (Karen) Lane, Nathrop, Tina Lane, Texas, Mendy Lane, Buena Vista, Danielle Lane, Texas, and Janet (Daugherty) Jonker, Denver; and many friends.
