Robert J. “Bob” Wichmann, 83, died March 13, 2019, at his home in Buena Vista. He was born Oct. 7, 1935 to Arthur and Gertrude Wichmann. His father was a professor at Colorado School of Mines in Golden. Mr. Wichmann graduated from Golden High School in 1953 and received a degree from Colorado School of Mines in 1957. He taught math and science at Buena Vista High School for 12 years. He then spent two years as an exchange teacher in Australia. Upon returning home, friends and family said he changed direction and took on a variety of work that allowed him to pursue his avocation experiencing the wonder, beauty and outdoor adventure offered by the Rocky Mountain environment in which he was living. He enjoyed hiking, biking, skiing, hunting, fishing and climbing fourteeners with his close friends. He held a variety of jobs during the next more that 40 years, but still remained involved with sports related activities at the high school. He worked for a major construction company, managed Buena Vista Heritage Museum and assisted at the Buena Vista Veterinary Clinic among other jobs. Tennis became a focus and he was instrumental in creating Rocky Mountain Racquet Club, an effort for which he received a national award in 2017. Mr. Wichmann was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Ted. Survivors include his brother Paul (Nina) and seven nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. March 30, at the American Legion Auxiliary building, 338 N. Railroad St., Buena Vista. Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
