Reynel "Tookie" Mingus Obituary

Former Salida resident Reynel “Tookie” Freeman Mingus, 88, died Sept. 29, 2018.

She was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Salinas, Calif., to Majorie Wilson Freeman and G.W. “Gene” Freeman.

She grew up in Monterey, Calif., where she met her husband, Lowell E. Mingus, a military policeman stationed at Fort Ord, Calif.

Together the couple lived and traveled around the world to such places as France, Korea and Germany. Additionally they lived on many military posts throughout the USA.

Eventually the couple retired to Salida and lived there for about 17 years until Mr. Mingus died in 1991.

Mrs. Mingus then moved to Tucson, Ariz., where she lived for the past 27 years.

As a military wife, Mrs. Mingus had many adventures and responsibilities.

She was a Red Cross volunteer, a hospital Gray Lady, played women’s softball, was active in the NCO Wives Club, taught Sunday School and played golf.

After her husband’s retirement from the Army, she worked at Salida Hospital in sterile supply.

Preceding her in death were her parents; stepfather, George Tash; husband; brother, Gilbert L. Tash; granddaughter Katy Gunter; father-in-law, Clarence E. Mingus; and mother-in-law, Anna Pryor Mingus.

Survivors include her children, Yvonne Denmark, Georgine Woodley, Lee Ann Patrick, Susan Rose, David Mingus, Steven Mingus and Jeffrey Mingus; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Per Mrs. Mingus’ wishes, there will be a private family service with her ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean.

A headstone will be placed in Fairview Cemetery at the Mingus family plot.
