Mary Moore Obituary

OBITUARY FOR MARY ADELINE (OWENS) MOORE Mary Adeline Owens Moore was born in a logging camp near Grants, New Mexico, on December 4, 1927, to Mary E. and William F. Owens, and passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022, in Salida, Colorado. She was mostly raised north of Villa Grove on the Barsch & Miller Ranch under the watchful eyes of her Aunt Polly (Paulina Hoffman Barsch) and Uncle Jake (Jacob Barsch), as Bill and Mary Owens were in the horseracing business and had to change locations frequently and felt that Little Mary would be best educated if she were in a more stable environment. She loved joining her parents during the summer months. Mary had two older half-sisters, Minnie and Nora, both deceased, and a half-brother, Joseph, living in Abilene, Texas. In the early years Mary attended school in a one-room schoolhouse north of Villa Grove. About the only other student was her close friend, Doris Schneider. Mary attended high school in Salida and graduated in 1945. Soon thereafter she married Vernon Williams, a Salida boy who had joined the Navy. They had one daughter, Barscha Lee Williams. The marriage was short-lived and Mary returned to the Valley where she met and married Jimmy Moore on March 16, 1950. Jimmy adopted Barscha and treated her like his own. Son, Jimmy, Jr. was born in 1951, followed by sister Diane Elaine in 1953. Mary was an accomplished woman: business woman, loyal wife, caring mother and grandmother, good cook and homemaker. When all three children were out of school in 1974, Mary began working at the County Clerk’s office in Saguache under Gloria Belluni and then Bill Bond. When Billl Bond retired, Mary ran for, and became the County Clerk. She held this position for 12 years and retired in 1994. Mary was involved in Eastern Star and was active in the Villa Grove Fellowship Church. She was also a member of the Monarch Quilting Club and did volunteer work at Columbine Manor for several years. Mary and Jimmy celebrated their 71th wedding anniversary in March, 2021. Mary was predeceased by husband, Jimmy, and daughter, Barscha Richey. Survivors include children Jim (Dean) and Diane; grandchildren Robb Richey (Danielle), Cheri Coleman (Mike), Heather Lansaw (Carey), Amber Flowers (Chad), James Hefley, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. A memorial service will be scheduled for some time during the summer of 2023.
