Evelyn Jean Mar, 77, of Salida died March 4, 2022 at Heart of the Rockies Medical Center, surrounded by family. She was born August 11, 1944 to Mildred and George Petersen in Denver Jean was raised in Denver and graduated from South High School later attending UC Boulder, University of Michigan and Arizona State University. Her family loved the outdoors, she enjoyed the quiet time laying by a stream reading and enjoying nature. She lived in Oregon, Michigan and Florida before settling in Tempe, AZ for over 25 years, retiring to Salida in 1990 as her parents had done in 1974. She was proud to be employed over 25 years at IBM holding many positions including her favorite, Human Resources. Her compassion was always present in her business and personal life. Many friends will miss her calm,compassionate and encouraging time together. Always seeking opportunities to encourage and support anyone in need. When Jean visited her parents, she didn't understand why they stopped and spoke with so many people, it wasn't what she did in Tempe, AZ . After returning to Salida, she found herself doing the same as her parents stopping often to talk, she loved living in Salida. Jean learned to be a yard sale fan shopping every Friday and Saturday and making friends. She collected jewelry, nicknacks and loved to buy clothing that overflowed her closet. Many hours of volunteering at Arizona Fish and Game, The Nature Conservancy, Salida Pregnancy Center, Salida Vineyard Church and others reopened her to the outdoors. Favorite memories were hiking the Napali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii Volcano National Park and Grand Canyon National Park. Hiking the many tropical trails and walking at night on glowing lava flows pouring into the Pacific Ocean. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and brother Edward. Survivors are her sons Eric Buley and James W. Marr, husband Bill, daughter Suzanne Vehr (Mar), granddaughter Sarah Vehr and many nieces and nephews. Celebration of her life will be held 10:30 am, July 2, 2022, at Salida Vineyard Church, 1201 E. Rainbow, Salida, CO. The family ask attendees to bring fun stories and memories.
