Bernice L. Walker, age 92 of Salida entered into eternal life with the Lord on April 29, 2020, just 10 days prior to her 93rd birthday. She was born May 9, 1927, in Palestine, Texas to Leander and Grace (Shaver) Hinson. She suffered with Polio at the age of 4 and lived from that age with her aunt and uncle, Virgie and Frank Collier, to recover from her illness nearer to healthcare providers in town.
She went on to be trained as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and practiced in Palestine, Texas for many years, many of which were in various long-term care facilities in that community. She met and married her soul mate, Virgil R. Walker, on May 29, 1954 and they relocated to Wichita Kansas where Virgil was employed at the time. Their union remained steadfast until Virgil passed away in Salida on July 11, 2010 where they had retired.
Bernice is survived by her only daughter, Carolyn (Benny) Webb of Nathrop, CO; two grandsons, Benny Allyn (Ashley) Webb of Salida, CO and Timothy J. (Jillian) Webb of Pueblo, CO. She leaves three granddaughters, Averi Webb, Austyn Webb and Madisyn Wilcox. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers David and John Hinson both of Palestine, Texas and her husband. She is also survived by many friends, particularly those with whom she played dominoes at Mount Shavano Manor over the years and her surrogate family at Columbine Manor Care Center who tenderly cared for her for nearly 10 years during her residence there.
Graveside services will be held at Fairview Cemetery where she will be laid to her final rest beside her husband Virgil. Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to Columbine Manor Care Center through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. On line condolences may be sent to the family at lewisandglenn.com.
