Alfred (Fred) Evans passed away on Sunday, July 11th, 2021 surrounded by his family, after battling miner’s lung for the last 5 years.
Fred was born December 26, 1958, in Salida, Colorado to Ruby and James Evans.
Fred was passionate about three things in his life. His wife Debbie, family, and mining. Fred started working at Asarco Blackcloud Mine when he was 17 years old and married his high school sweetheart at the age of 18. They gave birth to their first child Greg in 1977. They had four children, Greg, Jimmy, Mandy, and Bobby.
Fred worked at Asarco in Leadville for 25 years until it closed. After that he worked at mines all over the country included New Mexico, Montana, Arizona, Ohio, Maryland, and New York. He spent his weekends in the summer taking his family to drilling contests all over Colorado where he won numerous trophies. The most memorable one being the team couple drilling with Debbie where they won.
His pride and joys were his 3 grandchildren, Terrance, Chase, and Colby. Fortunate to live right by them, he had a special relationship with each one of them.
Debbie was and is the love of his life. He used to hitch hike from Salida to Howard to see her. They were married 44 ½ years. Loved working in his yard with “his lady” planting flowers. They enjoyed traveling together especially the last family trip to California with the grandchildren. He loved the Raiders, Yankees, and OU football.
To his coworkers he is known as one of the hardest working men they ever knew. Fred was a legend in the mining world. To his family he is remembered by his chocolate heart, smiling eyes, humble and kind soul, a loving husband, an amazing dad, and the best grandpa ever.
Fred is preceded in death by his son Greg Evans, parents Ruby and James Evans, sister Darlene Evans, brother James Evans Jr., Lucia and Martin Padilla.
Fred is survived by his wife Debbie, son Jimmy Evans, son Bobby Evans, daughter Mandy (Heith) Jackson all of Howard, Sister Cheryl Evans of Howard, Barbara (Steve)Espinoza of Grand Junction, grandchildren Terrance Evans, Chase Jackson, and Colby Jackson, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Church in Salida Saturday, July 24th, 2021 at 11:30am with a lunch reception to follow.
