William H. Stoothoff, 43, of Buena Vista died Feb. 7, 2018, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 14, 1975, in Greenwood, Miss., to William Leroy and Margaret Ann Stoothoff.

His family moved to Colorado Springs in 1986.

He graduated from Rampart High School in Colorado Springs, where he played football and participated in track, wrestling and DECA.

He attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he graduated with high honors.
He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned his doctorate in neuronal cell biology for his work on Alzheimer’s disease.

He was invited to Harvard Medical in Boston, Mass., to do post-doctoral research on ALS and Parkinson’s diseases.

From Harvard he continued his research at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., where he was an assistant professor.

Family and friends said Mr. Stoothoff touched many lives along his academic journey and always shared his love for the Lord along the way.

They said that wherever he was living and working, he always found a church home and served them well.

They also said as much as he loved research and teaching, he loved his home of Colorado more.
In 2013 he settled in Buena Vista to be with his family.

After several part-time jobs Mr. Stoothoff returned to research with Topogen Inc., where he was vice president of research.

Mr. Stoothoff loved all-terrain vehicles, fishing, refereeing basketball, working with the youth group at Clearview Community Church and teaching at Colorado Mountain College.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Maggie Stoothoff of Buena Vista; sister, Joanna (Greg) Beran; nephews, Brett and Luke Beran of Midland, Texas; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

His celebration of life service will be at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 17, 2018, at Clearview Community Church in Buena Vista.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clearview Community Church Youth Group.
