Thomas Eugene Yerkey, age 74 of Salida, passed away on Friday August 25, 2017 after a nine year battle with Multiple Myeloma cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters in his home in Salida.  Mr. Yerkey was born May 9, 1943 in Aledo, Illinois to Harold and Louise (Parkman) Yerkey.

At age 15, he began working at Geneva Glen Camp in Colorado.  He returned every summer and eventually met a young counselor, Karen Dean, who would become his best friend and future wife.  They were married August 29, 1965 in Parsons, Kansas.

Tom graduated from Aledo High School and received his bachelor and master’s degree in mathematics from Illinois State University.  He went on to work on his doctorate degree at the University of Missouri.

He was employed at John Deere in Moline, Illinois before returning to Colorado to teach high school math and start his own business in landscape irrigation.  In 1979, the company incorporated two more branches in Phoenix and Dallas.

After working in Arizona for 11 years, Tom retired and he and Karen moved back to the mountains in Colorado falling in love with their new home in Salida.

Tom’s tenacity, hard work and sense of humor were admired by many.  He loved a challenge; whether it be running marathons, playing tennis, climbing 14’ers, hiking endless trails from Colorado to the Grand Canyon, fishing high mountain streams, starting new businesses and improving the lives of those around him.  But his greatest passion was for his wife, his three girls and four grandsons.

Tom served as past Director of Geneva Glen Camp, President of S Lazy U Trout Club, member of Salida Rotary and 10 plus years on the Salida City Council.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Karen (Dean) Yerkey, their three daughters-Rae Lees, Fran (Jeff) Held and Sara Yerkey.  His brother Jim (Marilyn) Yerkey, niece Tina (David) Poel, cousins Dwight and Blaine Shoemaker and four grandsons, Creede, Tag, Cooper and Oscar.  Tom is preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Tim Yerkey.

Memorial Services are set for 10:30 AM Saturday September 9, 2017 at the Salida United Methodist Church.  Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to either the Salida United Methodist Church or Geneva Glen Camp Scholarship Fund.  On line condolences may be sent to the family at  Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Karen, I am so very sorry to hear the news of Tom's passing. Tom was such a delightful man and you two were so perfect together. I know you will miss him terribly, but he fought such a courageous fight and I know that will make you proud. May the memories that mean the most to you live forever in your heart. Hugs from Bev Heppler

Dear Karen,
I am so sorry to hear about Tom. I met him a long time ago, but since then have gotten to know you a little. Unfortunately, I know all too well about losing a husband, and it is not the easiest of situations to handle. If I can be of any help, please let me know. I also want to thank you for coming to Victoria's recital, particularly in light of the fact that Tom had been sick. That was so generous of you and I know your being there meant a lot to Victoria.
With compassion,
Conrad Nelson

Karen, So sad to hear about Tom. There are so many wonderful memories of you both in our years at Geneva Glen. The Gilmores loved Tom so ! I think Mr. Gil thought of Tom as the son he never had. May time heal your pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your daughters. Love, Jan
