Theodore Hafer “Pete” Gibbens was born May 5, 1931, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Ted and Mary Gibbens.  He passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord at home surrounded by loved ones August 14, 2018.

Pete was raised and attended schools in Pueblo, Colorado, and graduated from BVHS in 1949 after the family moved to the Clear Creek Ranch in 1946.

He served in the Army as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict, serving 2 years (1952 – 1954) in Germany.  Pete was decorated with the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. Eight days after his return from Germany on May 15, 1954, he married Carol LaVerne Packard in Raton, New Mexico.  Pete, also, worked for Eveready Freight, Avery Construction, and ASI.

Pete is preceded to Heaven by his loving wife of 62 years, his parents and sister, Mary Jean Billups.  He is survived by his brother, David Gibbens (Mary), Palisade, Nebraska, children Joe Gibbens, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Janet Moore, Gunnison, Jill Buttermore (Roy), Gypsum, and grandchildren Clint Moore, Grant Laman (Dani) and Jacque Laman, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and traveling.  His family was always number one in his life.  Pete was a long time and dedicated member of the American Legion Post 55 for 52 years. Other organizations he was involved in were square dancing, BVHS Booster club, and one of the earliest  Collegiate Peaks Rodeo Committees .

Pete’s services will be held September 8 at 11:00 am at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Buena Vista with a luncheon and ice cream social to follow.  Burial of both Pete and Carol will be at 5:00 at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military honors
