Joseph Paul Nelson

Joseph Paul Nelson "AKA Papa J Hammond", 73, of Salida, died Friday December 14, 2018 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. 

He was born November 18, 1945 in Arizona to Edward and Mary (Quackenbush) Nelson.

Papa J Hammond was a local keyboardist for 50+ years. He played multiple local venues such as FIBARK and multiple locations throughout the state as well as across the country. He also played for active troops overseas through the Department of Defense's USO program from 1994-2000.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Angeles Nelson of Salida, CO Brothers George Nelson of San Diego, CA and Mario Nelson of Monte Vista, CO, Daughter Fran Nelson of Pueblo, CO, Son Jubal Nelson of Palmer Lake, CO, Son Samuel "Sammy" (Lisa) Nelson of Erie, CO and Daughter Maria Nelson of Salida, CO. Grandchildren  Kaius Nelson and Akayli Nelson of Erie, CO. 

There will be a funeral service on Friday December 28, 2018 at 12pm at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home (203 E. Sackett Ave. Salida, CO) with a reception at the family home.
