Fred Rasmussen, 95, of Salida died Jan. 17, 2019, in his home.
He was born April 9, 1923.
He served as a B-17 radio operator in World War II and was shot down twice behind enemy lines.
He married his wife, Jeanne, in 1973.
Mr. Rasmussen was a writer, teacher and a biology curriculum consultant.
He was an active fly fisherman who was most at home on the water. An expert fly-tier who often donated his work to Trout Unlimited and other charities, he was a member of Trout Unlimited on both the local and national levels.
Family members said his huge heart, wry wit and activist drive made him an outspoken personality in the community. They said that clarity of purpose means he wasn’t always appreciated by everyone, but he was certainly respected and loved by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife.
As he wished, his body will be donated to science.
